Abstract:
This long-term study of student nominations for teaching awards highlights that crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic require high-quality teaching and sharpen our understanding of what constitutes it. Such crises also demonstrate that high-quality teaching consists of the triad of teaching, guiding – and assessing! Nothing more, nothing less. A crisis such as the pandemic also shows that academic teaching still relies on the age-old famulus-professor relationship: teachers must be individually available to students. The evaluations, which are based on teaching award nominations and which are systematically described in this paper, could be discussed in courses with students and teachers in order to sharpen their understanding of good learning and teaching – just like you would ideally with regular teaching evaluation results.
