Abstract:
Generative AI chatbots are increasingly used by university students for emotional support beyond academic purposes. This exploratory study examined how AI-based interactions relate to loneliness and perceived support among students. In an online survey (N = 137), students reported moderate levels of loneliness, with about one third experiencing elevated loneliness. Perceived social support from AI was relatively high, yet it was not associated with lower loneliness. Lonelier students reported more frequent friend-like interactions with AI, which were strongly linked to perceived AI support. Overall, AI appears to be used as a judgement-free tool for short-term emotional regulation but does not replace social connectedness nor is associated to loneliness.
