Abstract:
Many efforts are made to enhance gender equality at universities, but women still face challenges in appointment processes. This study examines the criteria used to evaluate academic performance in appointments and ways to make them more „diversity-friendly“ and supportive for female careers. Therefore, female junior and full professors at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg were asked to share their experiences and recommendations for improving selection processes. The answers demonstrated that in addition to quantitative measures (e.g. publication counts), especially qualitative criteria, such as leadership and social skills, should also be prioritized and checked during interviews. Overall, this study provides insights to the experiences of female professors, compares gender equality strategies of different institutions and suggests valuable improvements for the future.
