Abstract:
Skills shortages, demographic changes, and evolving work cultures – these are buzzwords that have been concerning companies and academia for some time. Employee retention is a critical factor in today’s working world, especially given the shortage of skilled workers and the entry of Generation Z. The upcoming generational shift will significantly change the situation for skilled workers on the labor market. Companies need to implement retention-oriented personnel development measures in order to retain trainees in the long term. However, Generation Z brings a new set of values and individual demands that will greatly influence employee retention strategies. The aim of this article is to provide insights into the field of employee retention using the example of trainees at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The work-related values and specific reten-tion factors of this generation are examined and various strategies for retention are being presented.
