Abstract:
Working conditions are pivotal for the physical and mental well-being of academics. These conditions involve demanding productivity expectations, job insecurity, and unclear career paths, all of which can impact the attractive ness of universities as employers. Consequently, this can lead to reduced health and performance as well as turnover intentions – a vicious circle that needs to be broken. This article delves into the relationships between work requirements and rewards with respect to a work stress model called Effort-Reward Imbalance model. Additionally, we discuss recommendations on how universities can enhance their attractiveness as employers by improving working conditions to foster a healthier work environment for academics.
