Abstract:
Interdisciplinarity is broadly acknowledged as the best way to deal scientifically with complex real world problems. However, interdisciplinary research is a challenging process, since every discipline has its own episte-mology. Combining various epistemologies by a bundle of disciplines is not an effective way to reach interdiscipli-nary problem solution. Interdisciplinarity begins “in the head” (Mittelstraß) of the researcher and thus can only be realized in thinking. Though this seems obvious, it is rarely thematized. What characterizes interdisciplinary thinking and how can it be supported?
