Abstract:
Internationalization, increasing competition, financial uncertainty and technological disruption create ongoing and overlapping change impulses for higher education institutions. While agility is increasingly discussed in higher education management, the strategic question of how much agility a university actually needs remains underexplored in the higher education governance debate. Building on the dynamic capabilities perspective, this paper reconstructs agility drivers from the general management literature and develops a multi-level model for the higher education context. Based on this model, a diagnostic instrument is proposed that enables university leadership to assess their organization-specific agility need along frequency, complexity and simultaneity of change drivers.
