Abstract:
Loneliness among students is a growing problem in the university context. This study investigates which aspects influence the experience of loneliness and what role loneliness plays in student satisfaction and the development of thoughts about dropping out. In a recent university project, 290 students were surveyed quantitatively. The results of the regression models show that characteristics of study organization, social integration, and self-regulated learning skills contribute significantly to the development of feelings of loneliness. Conversely, feelings of loneliness contribute significantly to lower student satisfaction and the development of thoughts about dropping out. The results indicate that this issue should receive more attention from the institutional perspective.
