Abstract:
This paper examines the personnel and employment structures at private universities of applied sciences in Germany. Theoretically, the study draws on concepts of employment regimes routed in sociology of work and industry, as well as approaches to the governance of academic work. Based on data from the Federal Statistical Office, six employment regimes are identified using hierarchical cluster analysis. The results reveal a pronounced heterogeneity in personnel and employment structures. Results are specifically interesting with respect to diverse patterns used to ensure flexibility, which differ with respect to the type and proportion of destandardized employment patterns. Thus, the study gives insights into academic employment in the private higher education sector, it can inform policy discussions on working conditions and provide orientation for institutional and individual actors.
