Abstract:
In the discourse of higher education policy and in the management practice of universities, the measurement of study durations plays an important role, not least because long study durations are considered predictors of study dropout. In contrast to many comparative studies in Germany, which focus, for example, on types of universities and subject groups, this contribution takes an institutional perspective in analyzing long study durations. First, it examines how study durations have developed in relation to different subject groups and over time. Subsequently, institutional contextual factors, including regulations relevant to studies, are analyzed as explanatory factors.
