Abstract:
If chatbots used in student counselling have to meet the same quality standards as those applicable to student counsellors, then they are not suitable given the current state of technology. It is unlikely that technological advances will enable Large Language Models (LLMs) to conduct information and counselling sessions that meet the quality standards for student counselling in the foreseeable future. LLMs cannot understand, empathise or continue learning independently. They are not capable of practical reasoning and cannot take responsibility. If language models are only to be used as interns, than chatbots can only be used embedded in counselling and coaching processes. In doing so, the high requirements for transparency and data protection must be met. The responsible use of chatbots requires a considerable amount of effort in terms of development, but also in terms of quality assurance. This raises not only questions of effectiveness and quality, but also questions of efficiency.
