Abstract:
Students, mostly young people in the phase of emerging adulthood, often experience emotional, social, and existential loneliness. The experienced loneliness can have relevant consequences for academic performance and thus, further endanger students’ mental health – which is at risk in the first place. Factors leading to loneliness can be localised on personal and inter-personal, as well as organisational and societal levels. Consequently, solutions to this major public health problem can be implemented on all these levels. However, universities should address loneliness first and foremost on the organisational level.
