Abstract:
The organizational units, status groups and hierarchical levels of higher education and science managers are well documented in the academic literature. However, it often remains unclear who exactly occupies these positions. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured expert interviews to gain insights into the actual work of higher education and science managers and to understand how they fill out their positions. This method also allows for a differentiated examination of the specific roles of higher education and science managers compared to broader work in higher education and science management. Finally, our findings highlight opportunities for further professionalisation of higher education and science management.
