Abstract:
With the rapid spread of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, it has become clear that research processes themselves will also undergo change. This raises important questions about meaningful application scenarios, good scientific practice, and competence development. In our contribution, we take a practice-oriented perspective on how doctoral researchers can further develop their (cross-disciplinary) competencies in the context of generative AI. We discuss suitable formats and highlight the priorities we set—going beyond mere experimentation with individual tools to consider questions of applicability as well as scientific and ethical frameworks. At the same time, we show how our institution contributes to the university-wide discourse on generative AI and policy making. Finally, we address how responsibility for building generative AI competencies can be shared among program designers, trainers, and participants in relevant qualification programs.
