Abstract:
University secretaries are a professional group that has received little attention in higher education research and policy to date, which is surprising given their large numbers and broad distribution across all organisational levels. This article examines the perspectives of university secretaries and addresses the tension between the position and status of secretarial work in terms of organisational performance requirements and recognition in times of competitive ‘entrepreneurial universities’. In particular, it focuses on the care work performed by this professional group, which is essential for the smooth running of processes at the university and for maintaining the academic family.
