Abstract:
Looking at developments in German universities, academics seem to lack reflexivity when it comes to decisions that affect their university. Newly created management structures do not do justice to the complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity in which these decisions have to be made. Reflexivity, which is orientated towards Schön’s Reflective Practitioner, also does not adequately address the problem. Although there are rules, instruments and practices that could promote organizational reflexivity, these do not develop their potential. Appropriate decision-making therefore requires a redesign of the collaboration between academics and management in universities in order to develop organizational and, not least, individual reflexivity.
