Abstract:
This article starts from the assumption that counselling can be understood, from various perspectives, as a ‘practice of liberation’. Here the focus is particularly on the aspect of a client’s free initiative in arranging a counselling session. It becomes apparent, that, in practice, there are numerous reservations and fears regarding counselling, in some cases precisely among those individuals who stand to benefit most from it. It is argued that even counselling sessions that have come about as a result of pressure can develop into genuine and successful counselling sessions. However, the challenges involved in meeting the complex demands of a student advisory service under these conditions are considerable.
