Abstract:
Although the RIASEC model is well validated for interest-based orientation in career contexts, findings for academic success are inconsistent. In a longitudinal study (n = 1,762) we therefore explored if RIASEC-based interests assessed via the orientation platform was-studiere-ich.de predicts academic success. Person-environment-fit was linked to self-reported grades, satisfaction, and dropout intentions. Our results indicate that higher person-environment-fit predicts lower dropout intentions and greater satisfaction with study content, after controlling for high school GPA and overall life satisfaction. There was no relation to academic performance. This underscores the importance of vocational interests for the emotional and motivational aspects of academic success.
