Abstract:
The development of “Ellie,” an AI-supported chatbot for student advising at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, addresses the diverse challenges faced by students, particularly those from international backgrounds. Drawing on 30 expert interviews and nine student focus groups, the study identifies difficulties related to housing, finances, employment, visa issues, and social isolation, with information deficits emerging as a key factor. The findings indicate that AI can provide low-threshold, context-sensitive access to relevant information and support services. At the same time, technical, legal, and organizational challenges arise, particularly concerning data protection, information quality, and system maintenance. “Ellie” is therefore conceived as a complementary tool rather than a replacement for personal advising.
