Abstract:
This article offers a qualitative insight into the current challenges of student counselling at German universities, based on two group discussions with student counsellors conducted using the Gruppenwerkstatt methodology (Bremer 2004). Drawing on the theoretical framework of habitus and milieu research (Bourdieu 1982; Vester et al. 2001), the study explores how counsellors navigate the complex demands of providing professional, student-centered support in the context of increasing institutional competition, driven by the principles of New Public Management. The analysis identifies three distinct, milieu-specific patterns among the counsellors and contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the milieu-specific practices shaping student counselling in the field of universities.
