Abstract:
Students of Sino-German Technical Faculty (Chinesisch-Deutsche Technische Fakultät: CDTF) have had the opportunity to graduate in technical majors in Germany as part of various collaborations with German universities since 2001. Students participate in German courses at CDTF to achieve the required language proficiency. Despite the available opportunities, many students decide against continuing their studies in Germany. The motivational influence of obligatory German courses and the prospect of studying in Germany on enrollment choice as well as the relationship between these factors and various aspects of enrollment motivation were investigated in this quantitative study. Results show that German class and studying in Germany are not relevant motivators for enrollment choice for almost half of the participants. Furthermore, only intrinsic enrollment motivation predicts relevance of German class and studying in Germany unequivocally. Significant effects of gender and Gaokao scores on intrinsic enrollment motivation within the context of this collaborative studies program were also found. The study discusses possible causes and implications of the observed phenomena.
