Abstract:
This article reflects on ten years of Academic Refugee Support at the University of Cologne. Established in 2016, the programme has developed from an initial response to the arrival of large numbers of refugees into a comprehensive support structure for people with refugee or international migration experience. A central element is individual, holistic counselling on academic, professional, financial, legal and social issues. Drawing on programme developments, participant data and three anonymised case studies, the article illustrates how counselling helps address complex and interconnected challenges in educational and career pathways. It highlights the programme’s role in promoting equal opportunities, academic participation, professional integration and an open university culture.
