
Quality Higher Education in SADC: Challenges and Opportunities

The first Higher Education Quality Management Initiative for Southern Africa (HEQMISA) Internation Conference was held in Benoni, South Africa, from 24 to 26 November 2009, and hosted various international experts as keynote speakers. The conference on Quality Higher Education in SADC: Challenges and Opportunities, aimed at redefining quality in higher education in the SADC region, where various national and international environments combine with a diversity of institutions and create a need for innovative quality improvement and quality assurance systems. A central goal of the conference was to expand the boundaries of quality frameworks to encompass all aspects of teaching and learning, research and community engagement, adademic development services and support services. Recognizing the importance of quality higher education for development of SADC, the conference discussed ways of meeting the needs of higher education in the region by sharing best practices and expertise. Therefore senior academics and educational stakeholders in the SADC region were brought together to encourage greater collaboration, enhance quality involvement, foster networking, and share strategic practices and visions.
