Abstract:
Part-time professorships enable knowledge transfer and can help universities of applied sciences to fulfill their missions. We analyze complete quantitative data from German universities of applied sciences. The results show significant differences in the proportions of part-time professors between public and private institutions, with half of all professors working part-time in the latter. Gender differences are reasonably small. Part-time professorships are often associated with structural disadvantages: The professors work more often on fixed-term contracts with lower remuneration and temporary sources of funding. We conclude that the conditions for part-time professorships need to be improved at both private and public universities to attract applicants and to increase knowledge transfer.
