Abstract:
Scientific institutions are struggling with a considerable modernisation backlog. In debates on this topic, the focus is mostly on material challenges such as a lack of funding, inadequate technical equipment and buildings in need of renovation. The necessary development of skills among scientific staff is less frequently discussed, but is nevertheless a topic of conversation among experts. In opposition to this, working conditions and skills development among science administration and technical staff have largely been overlooked. The authors of this article argue that the institutions will only be able to modernise their infrastructure, including in the context of digitalisation, if they overcome this blind spot and focus more attention on science administration and technical staff.
