Abstract:
The article discusses the financial challenges faced by German universities in spite of declining student enrolment due to still rising costs. As calls for budget cuts grow, they contradict the increasing financial demands due to inflation and elevated expenses in energy and personnel. University representatives emphasize that insufficient infrastructure investment hinders innovation in academia and society. A study estimates a need of 35 billion euros for necessary renovations in higher education. The article highlights the urgent need for a long-term funding strategy, addressing infrastructure, personnel, and digital transformation to ensure the sustainability and quality of education. Despite temporary declines in student numbers, the article argues that financial support for higher education remains crucial for fostering innovation and ensuring equitable access to quality education.
